Before you hire

Check the licence of any business before you agree to a quote, whoever it comes from. These are the official registers, by state:

• NSW: Check a licence: NSW Government, building and trade licences
• QLD: Check a licence: QBCC licensee register
• VIC: Check a practitioner: Victorian Building Authority (VBA) and Building Practitioners Commission (BPC)
• WA: Check a licence: DMIRS Building and Energy
• SA: Check a licence: Consumer and Business Services (CBS)
• TAS: Check a licence: Consumer, Building and Occupational Services (CBOS)
• ACT: Check a licence: Access Canberra
• NT: Check a licence: NT Government licensing

Five things to ask for on the quote

1. A written scope: exactly what work is included, and what is not.
2. The business's licence number (check it on the register above before you agree).
3. Insurance: what cover the business holds, and for what.
4. Start and finish dates, in writing.
5. Payment stages: how much, when, and what has to be finished before each payment.
